In 1990, the Conseil supérieur de la langue française proposed some change in the spelling of more than 2,000 words in French… Apparently these modifications were supposed to make our lives easier (for who?) by rectifying anomalies. Of course, this change happened too late for me: I learned spelling the old way… and “il est difficile d’enseigner de nouveaux trucs à un vieux singe”…
Fortunately those modifications did not affect the way we used to spell those words in the first place. All it does is giving more latitude since both versions are accepted!…
I thought you would have fun today by trying to find those new words… I actually spent more time on this quiz than I am used to! Yet, at the end, I scored 50/50… Though I have to say I have some trouble accepting change only because visually it bugs me: some of those words just look weird! I am also curious to read about your reaction… let me know!

Bonjour Lyne, j’ai eu 35/50 ! Pas évident, ce petit test, il y a certains mots (comme lave-vaisselles) qui s’écrivent comme ça en France, j’ai donc eu du mal à les repérer ! Par contre pas de problème pour autoécole qui s’écrit en 2 mots ici.

En effet, ce test est un casse-tête! Évidemment il y a des mots qui sautent aux yeux, en revanche certains sont plus subtils…
Il est intéressant d’apprendre que «lave-vaisselle» s’écrit au pluriel en France… ici, le singulier prévaut (quoique le pluriel, semble-t-il, ait été accepté il y a 20 ans). Quant à «autoécole», ici aussi ce mot s’est toujours écrit en deux mots avec un trait d’union. La raison étant que, dans ce contexte, «auto» ne veut pas dire «self» comme dans «autoportrait». Par conséquent, il n’y aurait plus de distinction entre les deux significations…
Il faudra nous recycler quoi!
