Job Titles in French: Feminine or Masculine?

It is the middle of the week and it is time for a new quiz. Feminism changed a few things in the 70s and French was not spared. Before, most job titles were masculine and no one would have even tried to turn them into feminine. Well… other times, other usages… I have to say that there are a few I would have preferred to remain masculine because, once feminized, they look and sound weird!

But I have no saying regarding new rules intended to please la gent féminine!… I admit it is always a puzzle for me… should I change this noun or should I leave it the way it is? I found a challenging test for you this morning: you will have to decide if all of the 10 proposed job titles can be turned into feminine. Some are not easy because we do not really use those terms on a daily basis, so… guessing is our best bet in that case!

I got 50/50 yet I disagree with one answer (although I wrote what I thought the OQLF wanted me to write!)… there was (and it is not over yet!) a debate on that particular noun in Québec and I thought the problem had been solved a long time ago because it seems that citizens made their choice. Well… apparently not! Can you find it?… Let me know!!!

Another stormy day in Ottawa to add to our misery… Anyone out there who still enjoys this kind of  winter scenery?

Let’s be patient and in the meantime, click here to play my game!

Bonne chance!!!

;-)

    Bonjour Lyne !
