Today I decided to give you the opportunity of testing your vocabulary at work… Of course, I chose a text using generic terminology because we all know that business places and federal departments have their own jargon (which unfortunately is not always accurate!)… For instance, at the National Defence of Canada, we can read and hear words like breffage (for briefing) and breffer (for to brief)… Sorry but those words do not exist in French!… a “briefing” is… a “briefing” in French as well… Therefore outside this department, the noun “breffage” does not ring a bell! It is not a crime to borrow words from another language… take the noun marketing: at some point, the idea of translating it with “marchandisage” had been contemplated… yet it did not live long. Therefore “marketing” became a word in use in French… As long as you find those mots empruntés in a dictionary, it is okay to use them…
That being said, I think you should try my quiz of the day… At first glance, it looks quite easy but… I am sure you will hesitate on some choices that will be offered to you… Picking the correct word or expression is not always as obvious as we might think… Not that I really want to brag about it, but… I took the test and, once again, I got a perfect score! Bonjour Lyne, j’ai eu 45/50 ! J’ai répondu “live” au lieu de “devant public”. Malheureusement en France nous utilisons BEAUCOUP de termes anglais même si la traduction française existe. Donc on dit “live”, et aussi “nominé” (pour les remises de prix du cinéma etc.). Mais pour “nominé” je n’étais pas tombée dans le piège, j’avais répondu “sélectionné” !!

Hé oui! Les fameux anglicismes! Ils se glissent partout… je suis au fait qu’en France, on emploie de nombreux termes anglais même lorsqu’il y a une traduction. Ici, nous nous surveillons davantage et ce, à cause de notre situation géographique… Histoire de protéger notre langue (et notre culture!). Tu as obtenu une excellente note… je sais que “live” est souvent employé!
